I understand that research in a vacuum doesn’t necessarily yield success, but I know they put in the time en effort to do it and it passed all the initial vetting enough to keep it there for several years. Think about this: Yes, Apple engineering and R&D doesn’t get it right all the time, but I bet you there are countless of documents showing data on how the Touchbar can improve ones experience with the MBP. Yes I too don’t look down, but that doesn’t stop me from looking down a bit or trying to incorporate it into my life. With that said, what I see here in many comments is that people are not able change their workflow and experiment for a bit with it. I find it useful and I love some of the perks it has while in different applications. I don’t dislike mine, but I don’t love it to death. And, still think it’s just a neat gadget. I still understand the benefit of reaching for dedicated keys, but it’s still outweighed for me by being able to make adjustments on the fly on the same part of keyboard real estate without having to constantly remap, use levels of fn keys, etc.

What it does not explicitally support is per-app configuration, but I still have elements of my touch bar change depending on whether some app is running or now. I say this because it seems the critique is that it’s not for power users. And then, without changing the code, you can create your own preset that would have buttons that execute AppleScript which can do a ton of things with many apps, hopefully Discord too.

Even though this is all conceptual at this point since they’re (almost) definitely killing it, is there a way that you figure they could design it to keep both sides happy? Some folks below suggested haptics for example. Not only do I think Apple should keep it in future generations (which it sounds like they won't be), but I have no idea why everyone hates on this thing all the time! I just bought the M1 MBP and it's my first Mac that has a Touch Bar. I use BetterTouchTool cause it has more customizations for the Magic Mouse and Keyboard but for your requirements, MTMR should do the job in flying colors.I get that purpose-built keys are easy to reach for and can be remapped, etc. I very like BTT and a full custom TouchBar (my BTT preset).
